Two youths, who were arrested in a fake encounter in connection with an attempted robbery in Hathras, have been released from jail after “shortcomings were found during the investigation”. A police officer gave this information to a news agency. Police said that two officers, including an SHO, have been suspended for negligence in the case and a magisterial inquiry is being conducted by Sadar SDM Rajbahadur Singh and Area Magistrate (City) Yogendra Krishna Narayan.
Earlier, according to officials, on October 9, information about an attempted robbery at a businessman’s house in Mursan police station area was received. Following the complaint, police claimed to have arrested two people after a “brief encounter”. In which one was shot in the leg.
Police said that both the accused have been identified as Omveer alias Sonu and Deva alias Suryadev Singh, who are residents of Barakala village in Iglas area of Aligarh. However, the families of both the accused alleged that the encounter was fake and demanded a fair investigation and strict action against those responsible.
Later the family met the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police (SP) to press their demand. Officials said that on the basis of preliminary investigation, SP Chiranjeev Nath Sinha suspended the then SHO Mamta Singh and Inspector Mukesh Kumar in-charge of the anti-theft team and handed over the investigation to the SDM and Circle Officer (CO).
Police had earlier claimed that two country-made pistols, three cartridges and a motorcycle were recovered from the arrested people. But after investigation the investigators did not find any concrete evidence against both of them. The final report of the case was presented in the court, after which he was released from jail on Friday.
CO City said that the youth have been released on the basis of shortcomings found during the investigation. The SP confirmed that “no concrete evidence was found against the youth in the cases registered by both the businessman and the police. On that basis, a final report was filed and the accused were released.”
