Former Team India coach Ravi Shastri has said that the ODI future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is still uncertain. He believes that the upcoming three-match series against Australia will play an important role in deciding whether these two great players will continue to play till the 2027 World Cup or not. While Shastri praised his incomparable experience, he also said that form, fitness and motivation will be the deciding factors.
During an event in Sydney, Shastri said that this series against Australia will act as a benchmark for both the players. He said, ‘That is why they are here (playing the ODI series against Australia). They are part of the team. It depends on his fitness, hunger and of course form. So, I believe this series is very important to see how they perform. He said that if this series does not go well then both the players can take a big decision.
Shastri also compared his situation with Steve Smith’s ODI retirement and made it clear that the final decision is in the hands of the players themselves. He further said, ‘They (Rohit and Kohli) will themselves know how they feel by the end of this series, and then it will be their decision. From Australia’s point of view, this is the same situation as it was with Steve Smith, who retired from ODIs in March.
Kohli and Sharma, who have already retired from Test and T20I, now only have ODI cricket left. The captaincy of India’s ODI team will now be in the hands of Shubman Gill, who will captain in this format for the first time. Although both Kohli and Rohit performed brilliantly in India’s Champions Trophy win, they have not played an international match since the final on March 9.

Despite this gap in international cricket, both the players have paid a lot of attention to their fitness and preparation. Rohit has especially lost weight and has practiced extensively in net sessions in Mumbai. His performance against Australia will play a key role in deciding whether he remains a part of India’s 2027 ODI World Cup plans or not.
