Renault has finally unveiled its much-awaited electric hatchback Kwid EV in Brazil, which will be sold in the market there under the name ‘Kwid E-Tech’. This is the same car whose petrol version created a stir in the Indian entry level car segment, and now in electric form this car is preparing to write a new story.
This car is considered an important step in the electrification strategy of the company. The special thing is that its test mules (testing models) have been seen many times on the roads of India, which is clearly indicating that Renault may soon launch it in the Indian market. If this happens, this car will directly compete with popular electric hatchbacks like Citroen eC3 and Tata Tiago EV. So let’s see how the new electric car is-
Based on Dacia Spring
The platform of Kwid EV is based on Dacia Spring EV, which is already quite popular in the European market. In terms of design, this car is reminiscent of its petrol version, but in the form of an EV, it has been given some special changes. Its closed grille and vertical slats at the front give it a solid electric look. Projector headlamps are installed on either side of the bumper.
how is the exterior
There are many elements in the exterior of Kwid E-Tech that distinguish it from other small EVs. It gets integrated turn indicators on the ORVMs, dual-tone wheel covers with 14-inch steel wheels, and thick wheel arch cladding, which gives the car a solid and sporty stance. Apart from this, finishing touches like black door cladding on the side, flip-up style door handles, and signature EV badging make it more modern.
However, despite these interesting design elements, the launch color palette looks somewhat lackluster. The shades used in the press images released by Renault do not look as “eye-candy” or attractive as the Dacia Spring EV. That is, the features are strong, but in terms of color tone and visual appeal, Dacia still seems to be a step ahead.
Tech-loaded interior
As soon as you step inside the cabin, the Kwid EV looks completely different from its earlier incarnation. It has a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which supports wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play. Along with this, features like 7-inch digital instrument cluster, USB-C ports, and height-adjustable steering wheel are also provided. This car has a boot space of 290 litres.
ADAS safety
Even in the matter of safety, Renault has not made any compromise. Kwid EV has modern safety technology like 6 airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), electronic stability program (ESP), hill-start assist, rear camera, TPMS, seatbelt reminder and ISOFIX mounts. The company has included safety features like Level-1 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) in this car.
Range and performance
Talking about powertrain, Kwid EV has a 26.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Regarding which the company claims that this car is capable of giving a range of up to 250 kilometers on a single charge. Its electric motor generates peak power of about 65 hp, which makes it perfect for city driving.
When in Indian market?
Although Renault India has not yet made any official announcement regarding the launch timeline of Kwid EV, but from the repeated sightings of its testing mule on Indian roads, it can be guessed that the company may launch it for Indian customers by 2026.
If this happens, then Kwid E-Tech can prove to be one of the most affordable and stylish electric hatchbacks in the country. Just like the Kwid in its petrol avatar had created a revolution a decade ago.
