At least 14 people have died after a mining site collapsed due to torrential rains in Callao, Venezuela. Officials gave this information on Monday and said that the accident occurred in three different shafts in the “Quatro Esquinas de Caratal” gold mine.

After the incident, officials set up a command post for search and rescue operations. It is being led by Brigadier General Gregory Gonzalez Acevedo, who heads the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis Operational Zone (ZOEDAN) of Bolivar state. Their objective is to safely remove the bodies of 14 dead people.

To begin the search for people trapped in the mine, water was pumped from all the shafts to lower the water level and then evaluate the rescue operation. However, officials did not share any further details regarding this. The death toll is based on statements from other miners, which firefighters from Ale Callao shared on social media.

According to the information, due to heavy floods in this area, the vertical shafts of the mines, locally called ravines, caved in. Île Callao is a town where most of life depends on the gold mines. About 30,000 residents here are directly or indirectly involved in the mining industry.
