Fatty Liver and Liver Health: Your liver is one of the hardest working organs in your body, helping to filter out toxins, aid in digestion and keep your body healthy. But do you know that some everyday foods can silently put your liver at risk. Dr. Adrian, a doctor of functional medicine, often shares many tips related to health, fitness and weight loss on his Instagram.
Some time ago, in one of his posts, he talked openly about those food items which can be most harmful for your liver. He also told about those foods which can harm your liver more than you think, especially if they are consumed regularly.
Not all fats are bad for your liver
He said in his post, ‘If you think that saturated fats like meat, desi ghee or butter are the most harmful for your liver, then think again.’
He further said, ‘They are really fine. Research shows that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is more dangerous for the liver and is closely linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Dr. Adrian said that while many people blame traditional fats like ghee and oil for liver problems, in reality excess sugar, especially fructose, is more dangerous. He further said that unlike glucose, fructose easily gets converted into fats in the liver, which increases the risk of liver damage. Over time this accumulation of fat can cause serious health problems including insulin resistance, liver inflammation and even liver cirrhosis.
Hidden danger in everyday food
HFCS is commonly found in processed foods like cookies, candy, breakfast cereals, cold drinks, and even sauces and condiments. He warned that these things may seem harmless but they often contain high sugar levels which can slowly put pressure on your liver.
Dr. Adrian says that you can keep your liver healthy by reducing your intake of these sweet processed foods and increasing your intake of nutrient-rich foods. Avoiding HFCS does not mean that you give up everything you like, but being alert about what you eat can be very helpful in protecting this vital organ.
