Indian Navy has got a big boost this week. “Mahe”, the first ship of a new warship series built in the country, has now joined the Navy’s fleet. It has been built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi. A total of eight such ships will become part of the Navy in the coming years.

The ship is named after the historical port city of Puducherry, “Mahe”, which reflects India’s maritime tradition and growing technological capability. About 78 meters long and weighing about 1100 tonnes, this ship is certainly small, but very powerful.

Mahe is equipped with anti-submarine torpedoes and multi-functional rockets. It also has radar and sonar systems that can detect threats hidden under water with great accuracy. The ship is also capable of conducting undersea surveillance, laying naval mines if needed and conducting small-scale military operations in coastal areas.
