IIT, not BITS… Do most of the students of these colleges work in tech companies? – tier3 college graduates and indian tech companies survey tstsd

People who studied from Tier-3 colleges of India are ruling big tech companies today. In these companies, they are working shoulder to shoulder with people who have studied from institutions like IITians and BITS Pilani.

Between 17 and 24 September, a company had conducted a survey regarding professionals working in tech companies. In this, responses were taken from 1,602 Indian professionals. In this, studying from a reputed college or university does not matter compared to talent and skills.

Colleges classified according to type of level
The colleges were divided into four tiers based on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025. As per the survey’s classification, Tier-1 included premier institutes like IITs, IISc, top IIMs and BITS Pilani. Tier-2 included reputed universities like NIT, DTU and Jadavpur University and Tier-3 included other state or private universities across the country.

Professionals working in tech companies gave such reactions
The survey found that leading technology companies are giving more priority to skills than their alumni. At companies like Zoho, Apple, Nvidia, SAP, and PayPal, many respondents said their college had little impact on their careers.

The number of Tier-3 graduates in the workforce averaged 34%. In contrast, the survey found that companies such as Goldman Sachs, Visa, Atlassian, Oracle and Google still rely heavily on campus recruitment.

Colleges have no importance in shaping one’s career.
The survey also revealed clear differences in how people see the role of their college in shaping their careers. Most Tier-1 and Tier-2 alumni attributed their career successes to campus recruitment, while 59% of Tier-3 graduates and 45% of professionals who studied from foreign colleges considered their college to be nothing more than a description on a resume.

Students of Tier-1 college got benefit in campus selection.
In terms of impact on salary, only 15% of Tier-3 alumni said that their education had a strong positive impact on their earnings. These findings highlight a changing trend in India’s technology industry. Where skills and adaptations outweigh the impact of college in shaping the success of professionals.
