US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned Hamas that they will have to give up their weapons. Trump said that if Hamas does not do so, the US will take swift and possibly violent action. He made this statement during a meeting with Argentina’s President Javier Milli at the White House.
Trump said that he Hamas Till date our message has been delivered through intermediaries. He said, “They (Hamas) will give up their weapons. And if they don’t give up their weapons, we will get them to give up their weapons and it will happen quickly, probably violently, but they will give up their weapons.”
The US President said, “I talked to Hamas and said that you will give up your weapons, right? And they said yes sir, we will give up your weapons.”
However, Trump did not clarify how Hamas’ weapons would be taken and who would be involved. Getting Hamas to disarm was a key part of the next phase of Trump’s 20-point Gaza plan, but the Palestinian group has refused to disarm.
Trump announces second phase of Gaza plan
Just hours after completing his visit to Israel and Egypt, Trump also announced the beginning of the second phase of his Gaza plan. The US President said on Truth Social, “As promised, the dead have not been brought back! The second phase is just beginning.”
He asked Hamas to release the bodies of people held hostage in Gaza. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “All 20 hostages are back and feeling better than expected. A huge burden has been lifted, but the job is not done yet.”
The hostages were released on Monday
This statement of Trump has come just a few days after the historic peace summit held in the region. In this summit, the Trump administration has achieved a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel under the 20-point peace plan. On Monday, Hamas released the last remaining Israeli hostages, while Israel freed several Palestinian prisoners under the agreement.
However, Hamas has not yet publicly confirmed the release of all its weapons. Trump indicated that Hamas may play a limited role in Gaza in the short term, but his ultimate goal is to completely give up arms.
He also acknowledged that Hamas had recently targeted rival gangs in order to re-establish its control over security in Gaza. According to the information, Hamas killed many people on suspicion of being Israeli spies.
Hamas adamant on not giving up arms completely
Trump’s plan clearly demands the complete disarmament of Hamas and no role for Hamas in the future governance. Hamas is partially accepting this demand. He says that he is ready to give up heavy weapons but is adamant on the demand of keeping some weapons with him.
He says that he has the right to his own security and resistance. But Netanyahu has made it clear that all types of weapons will have to be removed from Gaza. According to experts, it may be very difficult to completely eliminate the political and military wings of Hamas.
