The script for a historic change in the Indian automobile industry has been prepared. For the first time, top leadership in Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is being handed over to an Indian citizen. Tarun Garg will take over as the Managing Director (MD) and CEO of the company from January 2026. This occasion is not only an important turning point in Hyundai’s three decade long journey in India, but also creates a new story for the Indian auto sector.
This change is coming when current MD Unsoo Kim is returning to South Korea, where he Hyundai Will play a strategic role in the motor company. But before that he played an important role in strengthening the foundation of Hyundai in India, on which Tarun Garg is now going to write a new chapter.

Tarun Garg’s Hyundai journey has been no less than an inspiring automotive case study. From the time he stepped in as the company’s Head of Sales, Service and Marketing in 2019, till he became the Chief Operating Officer (COO) in 2023, he strengthened Hyundai’s presence not only in the market but also in the hearts of the customers.
Hyundai’s achievements under Garg’s leadership
Under Garg’s leadership, the company recorded its highest domestic sales for three consecutive years. Which is a big achievement for any foreign car maker in the Indian market. Not only in sales but also in terms of profits, Hyundai created new records under the leadership of Garg. The company’s profit in FY 24 was the highest ever. The Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Hyundai Motor India Limited in 2024 proved to be the largest IPO in the history of the Indian equity market. This achievement is a testament to Garg’s strategic vision and market understanding.
Under his leadership, Hyundai also focused a lot on digital technology. Initiatives like My Hyundai App and HSMART Dealer Network System set a new standard in transparency and trust at both the customer and dealer level. As a result, the company’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) reached above 90%, which is rare in the auto industry.
Have also given services in Maruti
Tarun Garg has more than 30 years of experience in the automotive sector. Before Hyundai, he had also held many senior positions in Maruti Suzuki India. Which includes Executive Director (Marketing, Logistics, Parts and Accessories). His experience touches every aspect of sales, marketing, distribution, financial management and product strategy.

Connection to Lucknow also
Talking about Tarun Garg’s education, he has done Mechanical Engineering from Delhi Technological University. Apart from this, Garg also has a deep connection with Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. He has done Master of Business Administration (MBA) from IIM Lucknow. According to Hyundai, under his leadership the company has done much better work in the direction of customer-centric development, local manufacturing and supply. Let us tell you that Garg will take over as the Managing Director (MD) and CEO of the company in January next year.
