A major accident took place in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka on Tuesday. At least 16 workers died and many others were injured in a fire that broke out in a four-storey garment factory and a chemical warehouse located nearby.
According to Fire Service and Civil Defense official Talha bin Jasim, the fire started in the chemical warehouse and spread to the factory. The fire first broke out in Shah Alam Chemical Warehouse and then reached Enar Fashion Garments Factory.
Fire Service spokesperson Anwarul Islam said, “During the search operation, 16 bodies have been recovered from the garment factory alone. The fire has been extinguished from the factory, but the fire is still going on in the chemical warehouse.”
The dead will be identified through DNA test
Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chaudhary said that the condition of the bodies is so dire that their identification will currently be possible only through DNA test. dead bodies Dhaka Medical colleges have been sent to the hospital.
He also said that probably all the deceased died due to inhalation of poisonous gas. Chaudhary said, “Our guess is that the fire started from a chemical explosion, due to which poisonous gas spread and many people died instantly.”
People were trapped on the second and third floors
The deceased were trapped between the second and third floors. The roof of the building was made of tin and tiles and the exit of the roof was closed with two locks. Due to poisonous gas and sudden fire (flashover), people became unconscious and died instantly. Chaudhary said that 6 to 7 types of chemicals were stored in the chemical warehouse, and it is still very dangerous to enter there. Technologies like drones and loop monitors are being used for rescue operations.
Yunus gave instructions to the officials
Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow over the incident and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. He directed the officials to investigate and provide necessary assistance to the affected families. Fire Service said that information about the fire was received at 11:40 am and the team reached the spot at 11:56 am. 12 fire fighting units tried to control the fire.
