Padma police post in-charge Sanchit Kumar Dubey told PTI on Tuesday that Mukesh Kumar Mehta, 30, killed his wife Sewanti Kumari (23), whom he had married four months ago, on the night of October 9. He had portrayed the murder as a road accident to claim the insurance amount of Rs 30 lakh.
The police officer said, ‘We received a complaint from passersby on October 9 about a couple injured in a road accident on the Padma-Itkhori stretch of NH-33. We immediately reached the spot and brought the deceased Sewanti Kumari and her husband to Sadar Hospital. Although the person was pretending to be unconscious. The wife was declared dead by the doctors in the hospital and the body was sent for post-mortem.

After this he also gave himself minor injuries and lay down on the road so that the incident seemed real.

Many things were not matching in the investigation of the incident spot. There were no signs of a bike collision nor was there any evidence of any vehicle. When the police investigated the mobile location and call details, they found out that many suspicious calls had been received on Mukesh’s phone before and after the incident. While talking to a friend, he had also mentioned the insurance claim. This clue proved decisive for the police.
