The gang rape incident that took place in Durgapur, West Bengal has shocked the country. Some people crossed the limits of cruelty with a medical student from Odisha outside the college campus on Friday evening. As soon as information about this incident was received, Durgapur police started swift action. Three accused have been arrested so far in this case. Two accused are absconding.
Meanwhile, National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar has claimed that the role of the victim’s friend in this case is suspicious. After meeting the victim in the hospital, he said that the medical student was asked by her friend to come out of the college. He said, “The victim’s friend is also now under investigation. She had insisted that he go out with her.
He further told that as soon as the accused surrounded the victim outside the college premises, her friend passed by. The police should investigate this angle deeply, because initial evidence is pointing to the fact that the friend’s role may be important in this incident. The victim’s father, who reached Durgapur from Odisha, has also raised questions on the role of his daughter’s alleged friend.
He said, “As soon as the accused surrounded my daughter, her friend ran away from there. My daughter is in a lot of pain right now. She can’t even walk. He is in the hospital bed. We are very concerned about his safety. We fear that they may kill him there any time. That’s why we want to take him back to Odisha. Now we have lost faith in Bengal. She can study in Odisha.
On the other hand, Durgapur police and forensic team reached the spot on Sunday. Documents, samples and important evidence were collected from there. Heavy police force has been deployed in the entire area to protect the evidence. Meanwhile, a team of Odisha government also reached Durgapur, which tried to meet the victim, but they were not allowed. Disappointed, the team had to return without meeting.
This team of Odisha government included Additional District Magistrate (ADM) and Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Balasore. They arrived in two vehicles with Odisha registration numbers and were accompanied by a total of three officers. But the team did not get any cooperation from the hospital administration and medical college officials. Odisha State Women Commission Chairperson Sovana Mohanty has strongly condemned the incident.

He said on Sunday, “This is not only an atrocity on the daughter of Odisha, but is also shameful for the entire country.” He said that as soon as the incident came to light, the Odisha government west bengal A letter was written to the government for immediate action. The Chief Minister himself has spoken to the victim’s family. She is personally monitoring this matter and is in constant touch with the concerned authorities.
He said, “One of our teams from Balasore district has already been sent to Durgapur so that the victim can get all possible help. But it is sad that she was not given support.” Accusing the Trinamool Congress government of disturbing law and order, Sovana Mohanty said, “36 hours after the incident, 3 accused were arrested, while 2 are still absconding. This is a failure of the administration.”
He further said, “I have heard that the accused are from the minority community, but this issue is not of caste or religion, but of justice and women’s safety. The remaining two accused should be immediately arrested and all the culprits should be given strict punishment.” Mohanty also announced that she would personally visit the incident site, meet the victim and inquire about her health.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also reacted strongly to this heinous crime. He wrote on social media, “This incident is disgusting and painful. I wish the victim a speedy recovery. There should be no place in the society for such incidents against women. I demand a fair investigation and speedy justice from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.”
Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das has also strongly condemned this act. He said, “I condemn the gang rape of an Oriya woman in West Bengal. Immediate and strict action should be taken against the accused.” He has instructed his women’s wing to play an active role in providing justice to the victim.
