The incident of alleged indoor molestation of two Australian players participating in the Women’s Cricket World Cup has increased the political tension on the Madhya Pradesh government. Opposition leaders are raising questions on the law and order situation in the state and accusing BJP of not ensuring a safe environment for women.
At the same time, BJP says that the government took immediate action and arrested the accused Akil Khan.
The incident happened when both the players were going from the hotel to the cafe the day after defeating England in the match. The accused Akil Khan, who was on a motorcycle, touched a player inappropriately while chasing the players and fled from the spot.
The players immediately informed their team security officer, who lodged a police complaint. Police registered an FIR under Section 74 (use of criminal force to outrage the modesty of a woman) and Section 78 (stalking).
Police said the accused was traced with the help of the motorcycle number noted by an eyewitness. Apart from this, criminal cases were already registered against the accused.
Political controversy increased on the matter
The incident has created a political storm regarding law and order in the state. The opposition reacted sharply to the BJP government. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted, “It is an insult. We talk about economic development, but are not able to provide safe space for women. This is a shameful act.”
Madhya Pradesh Congress State President Jitu Patwari accused Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and said that law and order is directly under him. He tweeted,Indore It is the same city whose law and order is directly under the control of the Chief Minister, Home Minister and Indore in-charge Minister Mohan Yadav. Such despicable acts cannot be ignored at any cost!”
BJP’s reaction
BJP tried to reduce political pressure. Madhya Pradesh Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said that strict action will be taken against the accused. He said, “We have ordered the concerned authorities to take strict action against the accused. Such an example should be set so that such incidents can be avoided in future.”
BJP leader Ajay Singh Yadav said that new laws will be brought to prevent such incidents in future. He said, “BJP is dedicated to the safety of foreign nationals and women, and steps are being taken in this direction.”
