‘Soldiers, finish them off today…!’ These words were of BSF Sub-Inspector Mohammad Imtiaz. Despite being seriously injured in Operation Sindoor, he was encouraging his comrades with these words. On May 10, there was heavy mortar shelling and drone attack from Pakistan on Kharkola Border Post (BOP) of Jammu. Sub-Inspector Mohammad Imtiaz and Constable Deepak Chingakham of 7th Battalion of BSF took charge. Imtiaz came out of the bunker and shot down one drone with LMG (Light Machine Gun) while Chingakham targeted the other drone. But then a mortar shell exploded nearby, seriously injuring both of them.

Imtiaz was hit by shrapnel at many places, his legs were badly injured, and he suffered serious injuries in his stomach and throat. Still, he did not accept defeat and kept ordering his soldiers, ‘Soldiers, eliminate them today!’ Ultimately, he was martyred in the line of duty.

Constable Deepak Chingakham was also badly injured. He was hit by shrapnel in his chest and his leg was broken but he refused evacuation. Refusing to leave his comrade alone, he too was martyred while fighting. Both martyrs were posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, which is the third highest gallantry medal awarded during wartime (after Param Vir Chakra and Kirti Chakra).
Apart from this, 16 other BSF soldiers were also awarded Police Gallantry Medal for displaying extraordinary bravery in Operation Sindoor. This story tells that every soldier standing at the border not only protects the country but also sets a new example of bravery by sacrificing his life.
