Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was as creative on the set as he was on the field. Famous ad maker Prahlad Kakkar mentioned this. He also talked about the famous cold drink advertisement of 1990 starring Sachin and Shahrukh Khan. Prahlad told that the most interesting twist in that advertisement was suggested by Sachin himself. He also made changes in Shahrukh’s scenes.
Sachin’s idea worked
Recalling the shooting, Prahlad told ANI that Sachin is a Marathi man, but initially he was a little shy and reserved. But then with time he gained confidence and also gave very good ideas.
Prahlad said, “He actually suggested ideas in the story of the ad which were very good, like the scene where Shah Rukh disguises himself as Sachin and goes into the World Cup team room and steals free Pepsi. And everyone else thinks he is Sachin.”
Prahlad further says, “In the advertisement, Azharuddin, impersonating Sachin, says to Shahrukh, ‘You go to bat.’ So he goes out to bat with full preparation. He looks very worried, looks around to see if something is wrong, and then Sachin comes. He takes off his wig and Shahrukh says, ‘Sachin, thank you, you have come,'”
Sachin made it fun
Prahlad told that in the initial script, Sachin himself would go out to play on the field with the bat, but this cricket great had a different suggestion which made the end of the advertisement more fun.
Prahlad told how after hearing the advertisement, “Sachin had said, ‘Why should I hold the bat? It is not fun.’ Then while giving his idea, he said – ‘I return to the room with Pepsi, and let him go out.’ So we also thought, ‘Wow, what a good idea.'”
This ad became one of the most memorable ads of the 1990s and also popularized the famous slogan “Yeh Dil Maange More”. This ad is considered one of the most successful partnerships between sports and Bollywood, and was a landmark in the Indian advertising world of the 1990s.
