Diwali gift from UP government! EV buyers will get refund of road tax and registration, know what are the rules – Uttar Pradesh Government Electric Vehicle Road Tax Refund Subsidy Policy

Electric Vehicle Refund Policy: In Uttar Pradesh, the government has given a big gift to the customers to promote the purchase of electric vehicles. Now purchasing electric vehicle in UP will be even more affordable. Those purchasing electric vehicles (EV) in Lucknow on Dhanteras and Diwali will now get refund of road tax and registration fee.

The government has decided to exempt EV buyers from these charges for the next two years. The Industrial Development Department issued an order to increase financial incentives on October 17, now the Transport Department will make amendments in the portal. Even before this, at the time of implementation of the policy, buyers had received refunds.

Before October 14, EV buyers had to pay 9% road tax on vehicles up to Rs 10 lakh and 11% road tax on vehicles above Rs 10 lakh. A registration fee of Rs 300 was charged from two-wheeler owners and Rs 600 from four-wheeler owners.

Now, this entire fee will be refunded to the people taking the vehicle during the festival and in future also they will not have to pay road tax or registration fee on EV for two years. At the time of implementation of the policy i.e. on 13 October 2022, a similar refund process was adopted. At that time, the cabinet headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had approved the EV policy.

How much subsidy on which vehicle?

Despite the time taken in ordering and portal updates, all buyers got the benefit of the discount. This time too, after the implementation of the order, the tax refund process will start soon. Under this policy, a subsidy of Rs 5 thousand is being given on two-wheeler electric vehicles, Rs 1 lakh on four-wheeler and Rs 20 lakh on electric bus.

The policy was amended in July 2024 due to non-completion of scheduled vehicle sales, now the subsidy will continue conditionally till 2027. Under the policy, subsidy is to be given to 25 thousand four-wheelers, 2 lakh two-wheelers, 400 e-buses and 1000 e-goods carriers. Till now, about 17 thousand four-wheeler EVs have received subsidy and this number has increased further due to increase in sales during festivals.
