After 54 years, the treasure room in the world famous Banke Bihari temple of Mathura has been opened today on the day of Dhanteras. Heavy police force has been deployed in the temple premises and tight security arrangements have been made. There is an atmosphere of curiosity and enthusiasm among the devotees and local people, because this room was closed for almost half a century. It is considered the treasure of the temple.
Sevayat Goswami Abhas Goswami, present in the temple, told that this room, located right next to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, was closed in ancient times due to security reasons. Earlier there was no adequate security arrangement, hence Thakur ji’s daily use items like utensils, pots, bathing materials etc. were kept safe in this room. Today the lock of the room was opened and some people entered inside. This room was filled with water, there was a lot of mud, rats were also visible inside. At present the cleaning work is going on. However, no valuable items have been found in the initial investigation. Goswami Abhas told that whatever material will be found in the treasure, it will be ancient items used in the worship and service of Thakur ji, like copper or silver utensils, pots, bathing materials or old jewellery.

He also clarified that there was never any treasure kept in the temple, which was deposited by the Maharaja or the state. Most of the material was kept only for the service and worship of Thakur ji. Special arrangements have been made by the High Power Committee in the temple for the visitors and devotees.
Only after the cleaning of the treasury room is completed, the items present in it will be brought before the devotees and media. The temple administration has said that all safety and religious rules will be followed before removing or arranging any item. This historical occasion in Mathura is important not only for the devotees but also for the people interested in history and culture. The process of opening this treasure after almost half a century has increased curiosity in the entire city.
