The Sessions Court of Mumbai has granted bail to Chandrashekhar Madhukar Kalekar, who was caught after being absconding as an accused for 48 years. This case is of 1977, when 23 year old Kalekar had stabbed his girlfriend due to suspicion. At that time he was arrested on charges of attempt to murder, but was granted bail by the court. After this he did not appear in the court and a non-bailable warrant was issued against him.

The police searched for him for many years, but Kalekar had changed his location in many areas of Mumbai. Later the police came to know that he was living in Dapoli, Ratnagiri district, from where he was arrested and brought to Mumbai. Identification was challenging for the police, but during interrogation he confessed to the crime.

The accused is 71 years old and is suffering from diseases.

Kalekar’s lawyer told the court that Kalekar is now 71 years old and is suffering from many diseases. In 2010, his house was demolished, due to which he went to the hospital and due to this he could not appear in the trial several times.

Government lawyer opposed the man’s bail

On the other hand, the Public Prosecutor opposed the bail and said that this is a serious matter and if he gets bail, he may abscond again.

The court has approved the bail keeping in mind the accused’s age of 81 years and his assurance of coming for the trial. Now his trial will start and the case will proceed in the court.
