On this day, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Kuber, the god of wealth, are worshipped. Besides, Lord Dhanvantari, the father of Ayurveda is also worshiped on this day. Dhanteras is celebrated every year on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. It is said that worshiping Lord Kuber on this day brings happiness, prosperity and wealth in life. But, do you know that Lord Ganesha and Mahadev together broke the pride of Lord Kuber. So let us know why Lord Ganesha had shattered the pride of Lord Kuber.
Lord Ganesha had broken the ego of god Kuber
According to the story of Skanda and Padma Purana, it happened a long time ago. Kuber, the god of wealth, had immense gold, silver and opulence. There was talk of his prosperity everywhere, but despite so much wealth, his ego was increasing. One day he thought why not invite Lord Shiva to his palace and showcase his grandeur and opulence.
He reached Mount Kailash and started inviting Lord Shiva for food at his home. Lord Shiva smiled and said – ‘I will not be able to come, but my son Ganesh will accept your invitation.’ Kuber was happy thinking that if not the father then even the son, glory can be displayed in front of anyone. Next day, Ganesh ji reached the palace of Lord Kuber riding on his vehicle Mushak. Lord Kuber welcomed him and expressed his desire to take him on a tour of his golden palace. Ganesh ji said laughingly – ‘I have not come to see Lanka, but to eat. Get me food quickly, I am very hungry.
Lord Kuber immediately served food, but Ganesh ji’s hunger kept increasing. Within no time he ate all the food and then started demanding more food. All the stores in the palace were empty, yet Ganesh ji’s hunger was not satiated. Finally, after getting tired, Lord Kuber folded his hands and said – ‘Lord, now I have no food left.’ Then Ganesh ji said – ‘The one who does not know how to satisfy even one guest is not worthy of being proud of his wealth.’ Hearing this, Lord Kuber realized his mistake. He fell at the feet of Lord Ganesha and asked for forgiveness. Ganesh ji blessed him and said- ‘Never be proud of wealth, otherwise this pride becomes the cause of destruction.’
