A court in Guwahati, Assam, sent two of his band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahant, arrested in connection with the death of famous singer Zubin Garg, to judicial custody. After the 14-day police remand of both of them ended on Friday, they were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Kamrup. From there, orders were given to send him to judicial custody.
After bringing the two accused Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahant to the court, they were sent to jail in separate vans under heavy police security. The court has ordered that he be produced before the court again after 14 days. However, the police has not clarified in which jail they will be kept. It is being told that the decision is being taken carefully after the violence in Baksa District Jail.
Earlier on Wednesday, five other accused arrested in the same case were taken to Baksa District Jail, where the situation suddenly went out of control. Thousands of people gathered outside the jail and started a massive demonstration demanding ‘justice for Zubin’. Some protesters demanded the handing over of the accused to the public. Within no time the situation went out of control.
After this, the police had to resort to lathi charge and tear gas shells. The mob attacked the convoy taking the jail, set vehicles on fire and pelted stones. Policemen, media persons and local people have been injured in this violence. To control the situation, the administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS. Internet and mobile data services were suspended in Baksa district.
So far seven people have been arrested in this case, who have been sent to judicial custody by the police. Both the members of Zubeen Garg’s band are also included in these seven. Apart from this, the five include North East India Festival chief organizer Shyamkanu Mahant, singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg, private security officers Nandeshwar Bora and Prabin Baishya.
All of them were sent to judicial custody by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate on Wednesday. The court had expressed concern about his safety. Along with this, orders were given that he should be sent to a jail with fewer prisoners. Under this order, the five accused were taken to Baksa District Jail, where the anger of the crowd took a violent form. on 19 september Zubin Garg Died while swimming in Singapore.
To investigate this, a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed on the orders of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The SIT detained many accused during the investigation and after interrogating them, confirmed the arrest of two members of the band on October 3. According to the police, more than 60 FIRs are registered against Mahant, Sharma and others across the state.
