The way has been cleared for India to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sports has recommended Ahmedabad, India to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. According to the statement of Commonwealth Sport, now Ahmedabad’s name will be proposed to the full member countries. The final decision on this will be taken in the Commonwealth Sports General Assembly to be held in Glasgow on 26 November 2025.

If Ahmedabad gets approval at the Commonwealth Sports General Assembly in November 2025, it will become the second city in India to host the Commonwealth Games after New Delhi in 2010. Nigeria also applied to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Why was Ahmedabad chosen?
The Evaluation Committee of Commonwealth Sports reviewed the candidate cities on several parameters. Such as technical preparation, facilities for players, infrastructure, administrative system and harmony with Commonwealth values. The Board said that both Ahmedabad and Abuja, Nigeria presented excellent and ambitious proposals, which reflect the growing effectiveness of the Commonwealth Sports Movement.
Employment, tourism and professional opportunities will increase
Players from 72 countries and territories will participate in the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The event will create new opportunities in many areas such as large-scale employment generation, tourism promotion, and sports and event management.
In fact, India is planning an inclusive sporting event, in which many popular sports which were removed from the 2026 Games – such as hockey, cricket, badminton, wrestling, table tennis, rugby sevens, beach volleyball, squash and gymnastics will be included again.
Nigeria also needs support for future events
The Board commended Nigeria’s impressive presentation and announced that Nigeria will be supported in preparing a roadmap and support for future Commonwealth Games, especially the 2034 edition. Commonwealth Sports said that this is part of the long-term policy of the organization, so that in future Commonwealth Games can be held on the African continent also.
