Magic: The Gathering and Marvel have already crossed over a few instances with Spider-Man and the Marvel Tremendous Heroes set final 12 months. However for its third Marvel set, MTG is getting spooky with Darkhold Future.
Fairly than being primarily based in a reasonably mundane model of New York, Darkhold Future is taking the likes of Physician Unusual and the Asgardians and telling a extra magical story (forgive me). What actually separates this new out-there set from the opposite two Marvel units is that Wizards of the Coast was actually capable of write its personal story with Marvel’s characters and settings, which makes them really feel much less like a crossover and extra like part of Magic’s multiverse.
With a brand new story written in-house, Wizards of the Coast was additionally capable of give its artists extra license to create their very own takes on Marvel characters. As an example, with Scarlet Witch within the Marvel Tremendous Heroes set, she appears to be like like a fairly normal tackle her comedian e book look. However within the artwork I used to be proven for Darkhold Future, she appears to be like far more like an MTG character, whereas nonetheless retaining a number of the signature components of her outfit – the masks continues to be there.
I used to be additionally given broad strokes of what the story is about. Primarily, Dormammu and Hela use the Darkhold to invade the complete multiverse, and it is as much as Physician Unusual, Thor, and different Marvel heroes to cease them. After all, due to the characters and, nicely, props that the story revolves round, the set is targeted closely on spellcasting.
Thematically, the spellcasting is targeted on what’s primarily three totally different ‘faculties’ of magic: Arcane, Divine, and Darkish. Arcane magic shall be themed round Physician Unusual and his allies, whereas Divine magic shall be wielded by the Asgardians and different comparable… entities. Darkish magic is primarily going to be wielded by the villains of the set, however there are some heroes, like Ghost Rider that can apparently be wielding Darkish magic.
You possibly can count on plenty of give attention to cool instants, sorceries and ‘distinctive enchantments.’ Wizards is even bringing again the Arcane subtype on instants and sorceries, which hasn’t been used since Saviors of Kamigawa all the best way again in 2005. I even requested if WotC is bringing again the obscure ‘Splice Onto Arcane’ capability that allow you to mix totally different arcane spells, however sadly, it’s not.
Similar to another current set, there shall be a complete lineup of various Darkhold Future merchandise. The usual fare is all right here, Booster Packs, Collector Boosters and Bundles; however there will even be 4 commander decks.
- Unusual Academy (White/Blue/Black)
- Gods of Asgard (White/Crimson/Inexperienced)
- Midnight Sons (White/Black)
- Lords of Hel (Black/Crimson)
Every of those commander decks will even have a collector’s version out there, which shall be fully decked out in foils. There will even be two scene bins, every with six mechanically distinctive playing cards. Each the Bundle and the particular Present Bundle will even include a mechanically distinctive promo card, and I simply hope they do not skyrocket instantly on TCGPlayer, however I do know that they in all probability will.
Wizards of the Coast shall be giving the primary glimpse of its unique Marvel story in February with a comic book produced alongside Picture comics. Then, one other comedian will come out nearer to when the set launches in April 2027.
