DOOM Ported To A $30 Clamp Meter

DOOM. Boil it, mash it, stick it in a stew, it’s the sport that runs on something and all the things. Now, the traditional shooter is operating on a quite unlikely goal—an affordable clamp meter of very restricted sources, thanks to the work of [Artur Bieniek].

The clamp meter in query is the FNIRSI DMC-100, which could be had for the low value of simply $30 or so if you recognize the place to look. It’s a far cry from the various 1000’s of {dollars} you’d pay for a heavy previous 486-based machine again in 1993. [Artur] obtained the doomgeneric engine operating on the Artery AT32F415 chip that runs the clamp meter.

The chip is fairly succesful, with its 150 MHz clock pace, although the 32 KB of RAM posed quite an enormous limitation to the challenge. It might be one of many lowest RAM DOOM ports on the market. Even with this restrict, [Artur] was in a position to get Episode 1 of Freedoom: Part 1 loaded on to the factor, together with E1M1 to E1M9 together with the title display, intermissions, the finale, the menu, and 4 save slots. Coloration graphics are displayed on the meter’s 320 x 240 display, and there are even sound results on the built-in buzzer. Controls are mapped to the quite curious selection of a DJI RC-N1 drone controller.

We’ve seen DOOM operating on all the things from desk phones to completely custom CPUs. Nowadays it’s important to attempt fairly exhausting to search out one thing it hasn’t already been ported to.
