I had no concept that Ben Affleck is such an avid PC gamer. The mega-star from numerous Hollywood hits just lately appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, the place he revealed that he spent years doing nothing however taking part in PC video games shortly after turning into well-known.
Affleck says, “There was a recreation referred to as StarCraft that in all probability took probably the most life out of me. […] I had simply gotten well-known, and all I did was keep residence for 3 years and play StarCraft.” Yeah, I might say we’ve got a gamer on our fingers right here.
Good Will Searching, the film that Affleck co-wrote and starred in alongside Matt Damon, received two Oscars on the 1998 Academy Awards, propelling him into stardom. Simply a few months later, the real-time technique gem StarCraft launched in March 1998.
Different long-time PC avid gamers little doubt recall StarCraft’s intense launch, which noticed about 1.5 million copies ship within the first 9 months. It was the best-selling recreation of the 12 months, and I can recall that it was virtually the one recreation my buddies and I may speak about for months after its launch.
We’ve a PC gamer right here, and his identify is Ben Affleck
Affleck’s online game historical past did not fairly begin with StarCraft, though it might need been probably the most affecting within the younger actor’s life.
He states that he was taking part in DOOM “endlessly, for hours,” earlier than and whereas he was engaged on Good Will Searching. Possibly that is the place a few of the jokes about Damon and Affleck’s shared (however skewed) workload on writing the film originated.
I bear in mind writing and taking these lengthy breaks to play DOOM. I can not imagine it has been out that lengthy.
Ben Affleck (Pleased Unhappy Confused podcast)
Going again even additional, Affleck says he performed Donkey Kong, Tetris, and Ms. Pac-Man for “tens of thousands and thousands of hours” in arcades and at residence. He nonetheless has a Ms. Pac-Man arcade cupboard at residence.
Affleck admits that he nonetheless enjoys PC video games right now, albeit from a barely completely different angle than all these years in the past. He enjoys 2K and Madden titles for a sports activities repair, which he performs along with his son. He calls Valorant “a fantastic recreation” that has one main drawback: “I simply get f***in’ rocked.“
As an grownup who has tried a majority of these aggressive shooters, I can relate to him accusing younger avid gamers with unbelievable reflexes of being cheaters. Listening to Affleck’s imitation of getting stubborn out by on-line squeakers is hilarious. The online game query comes up at concerning the 54-minute mark of the podcast.
Affleck also comments on how real-time strategy PC games have regressed in popularity over the years.
“I like those real-time strategy and civilization-building styles, which have sort of gone out of style.”
As someone who loves Age of Empires, I’ve no notes aside from to perhaps recommend Affleck give Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition a shot. Its competitive scene has never looked better, and there is an nearly endless stream of content material out there.
All this speak about StarCraft has me pondering it is time to set up it as soon as once more. I’ve but to present the remastered model a attempt, and the sport’s voice traces are bouncing round in my head. Anybody up for a fast match?
