Valve lastly revealed pricing for the much-anticipated Steam Body right now. The standalone VR headset begins at $1,059 for the 256 GB mannequin, whereas the 1 TB model prices $1,299. Pre-orders are open now by means of a randomized reservation lottery, just like how Valve dealt with the Steam Machine launch. Signal-ups shut on September 17, and Valve says it expects to ship the primary batch of buy invitations out on September 18. Valve additionally confirmed pricing for launch equipment, together with a $29 energy provide unit that surprisingly doesn’t come included. Different add-ons embody a $59 Ergonomic Equipment Package, and a $49 Accent Substitute Package for the face gasket and cushions.
The pricing follows the identical sample Valve set with the Steam Machine, which launched in June at a steep $1,049, a lot greater than anticipated. The corporate blamed DRAM and storage shortages for pushing prices nicely previous preliminary targets, and the identical appears to have occurred to the Steam Body now. Business stories say Valve had initially aimed to cost the Body under the $999 Index, however that purpose seems to have gotten buried beneath the identical reminiscence disaster. It looks as if all the VR and handheld gaming area is now paying the DRAM tax, and I doubt the Body would be the final machine to see its value creep upward earlier than launch.
