Govardhan Puja mythological story
The importance of Govardhan Puja is described in Vishnu Purana. It is said that Devraj Indra had become proud of his powers and Lord Shri Krishna had created a leela to crush Indra’s ego. According to this story, once upon a time in Gokul, people were preparing different types of dishes and singing songs with joy. Seeing all this, Child Krishna asked Mother Yashoda, what festival are you people preparing for? On questioning Krishna, mother Yashoda said that we are worshiping Lord Indra. On the answer of Mother Yashoda, Krishna again asked why we worship Indra. Then Mother Yashoda said that by the grace of Indra Dev, there is good rain and food is produced, our cows get fodder. After listening to Mother Yashoda, Krishna said that, if it is so then we should worship Govardhan Mountain. Because our cows graze there, it rains because of the trees and plants growing there. Following the words of Shri Krishna, all the people of Gokul started worshiping Govardhan Mountain.
Seeing all this, Devraj Indra became angry and to avenge his insult, he started raining heavily. Seeing the devastating rain, all the Gokul residents got scared. During this, Lord Shri Krishna showed his leela and lifted Govardhan Mountain on his little finger and called all the villagers under the mountain. Seeing this, Indra increased the rain, but despite continuous torrential rain for 7 days, there was no harm to the people of Gokul. After this Indra realized that the opponent could not be an ordinary human being. When Indra came to know that he was competing with Lord Shri Krishna, after this Indra apologized to Lord Shri Krishna and himself worshiped Muralidhar and offered him food. Govardhan Puja started after this mythological incident.
